Renewed push for English apple sales in new year, says Barlow

Impetus to a renewed English dessert apple promotional campaign has come from better-than-expected stocks and concerns about the durability of fruit in store, according to English Apples & Pears chief executive Adrian Barlow.

"We need to increase the speed of sales in the new year," he told HW.

"The wet weather interfered with picking what was already a late crop and we need to be cautious because the quality may not be as good as we would like. All marketing organisations are looking at their plans for the remaining season, and if they plan to promote, they need to do that sooner rather than later."

But he added: "There is a lot of pressure on prices and we don't want them to drift down further. Returns to growers are not as good as we need them to be."

EAP will continue last year's successful promotional campaign across a wide range of published, broadcast and online channels in the new year, he added. "We are trying to cover off as many avenues as we can in order to engage with all sectors."
