Regional experts added to PlantSnapp service

PlantSnapp is changing its business model to encourage more users to take up recommendations to buy plants sent by the online plant identification app company.

The business, which is run by chief operating officer George Williams, has bought a similar US company called Garden Compass. They now jointly have 90,000 customers, 300,000 plant pictures submitted and 50 experts across the globe.

The app has live country-specific horticulture experts who identify plants from pictures. Users are given care instructions and suitable product advice. After some free pictures, it becomes a subscription service. The business is now termed "Garden Compass powered by PlantSnapp".

Williams is son of Burncoose Nurseries owner Charles Williams. Burncoose has acted as a 'horticultural expert' behind the app since day one, taking some of the first plant identification enquiries during initial trials, and continuing its relationship with the new business, which launched in 2014. Chairman and investor is Angus Rankine.
