Record entries for Green Flags

Award scheme sees highest levels of participation since it began 8yrs ago

The Green Flag award scheme has this year received the largest number of applications since it began eight years ago. The Liverpool-based Civic Trust team has processed a total of 465 applications — an increase of 115 on last year, when 253 green spaces won a Green Flag and 27 voluntary and community-managed sites received a Green Pennant award. Green Flags recognise high-quality UK green spaces and parks. More than 450 voluntary judges are assessing the sites. The winners, based on assessments of management plans and supporting documents alongside personal site visits, will be revealed on 28 July at three regional award ceremonies. Judging criteria include: welcoming atmosphere; handling of safety, health and security; cleanliness and maintenance; sustainable practices; conservation and heritage; community involvement; and effectiveness of management plan.
