Alton Garden Centre director Andy Bunker said: "As per usual when it starts, blimey it starts. We had a record day in whole centre bank holiday Monday followed by this Saturday record day ever in the plantaria."
Longacres said its Shepperton centre had a record-breaking day on Saturday and Bagshot had its best week on record, with the bank holiday helping begin the record sales.
Longacres Mike Ainley said: "The biggest seller over the weekend was plants, plants and more plants. There was a lot of pent-up gardening frustration out there."
He added: "After a poor start to the year, May 2016 now holds three records – the busiest week ever at our Bagshot and Shepperton stores, and Shepperton’s best day ever on the Saturday."
Scotsdale also broke plants sales records at the weekend. Overall sales were 20 per cent up last week but still 3.5 per cent year to date behind last year.
Haskins were 32 per cent up on sales in bank holiday week, which brought the garden centre group back in line with budgeted sales year-to-date.
