Can you recommend a road-going bowser for watering hanging baskets?

We have not done any independent testing on bowsers but I can direct you to some companies.

There are many types but you should look for a "highway" model with hose and hand lance suitable for watering plants. Then assess the units in terms of how well they match your needs and budget. You should also consider the advantages of having a re-circulating system to enable the addition of liquid feeds, especially as you need to water hanging baskets.

The line-up from Bowser Supply of Rochdale, Lancashire, includes the Plant Waterer. These units were originally designed for watering hanging baskets but are also used for watering trees, shrubs and flowerbeds. The unit can be supplied with a plastic or galvanised tank and there is the option of adding a platform or ladder. A Honda petrol engine pump is fitted, with 30ft (9m) of hose and a "shepherd's crook". This waterer would be built on a road-going chassis with mudguards, brakes and lights.

Based in Heysham, Lancashire, Fuelproof manufactures water storage and transport tanks. It offers a 1,140-litre highway tow unit in single- or twin-axle specification. This unit comprises a rotationally moulded polyethylene tank on a galvanised tubular steel chassis. An access ladder and hose are supplied.

Water Tanks, based in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, offers storage equipment from underground oil tanks to rainwater harvesting kit. For highway use, its 1,125-litre Flower Watering Bowser has a polyethylene tank and is fitted with a Honda petrol engine pump, 50ft (15m) of rewind hose and a spray nozzle. Options include a chevron board with direction arrow and flashing beacons. Prices range from £2,685 (ex VAT).

The portfolio from Denver Tank Systems, Northampton, includes a professional range of watering tanks, bowsers and equipment for use with commercial vehicles and utility vehicles. Capacities range from 200 to 2,000 litres.

A selection of bowsers is offered by SCH (Supplies) of Ipswich. Fast tow models come in 1,140- and 2,273-litre models and can be fitted with electric pumps powered by the vehicle battery or independent petrol-engined pumps.

Several features on the SCH units should prove beneficial, including the re-circulating system for liquid-feed mixing. Prices start at £3,722 (ex VAT).

Perhaps you have a suitable vehicle and only need a tank with pump and lance. SCH also offers a skid-mounted basket waterer with 2,200-litre capacity. With an electric pump, this unit will set you back £2,777 (ex VAT). The petrol-engined version costs £3,092 (ex VAT).
