What would you recommend to clear leaves from large areas such as fairways and car parks?

A: You need something that is strong, powerful and will shift a lot of leaves quickly. I suggest you look at utilising a tractor, ride-on mower or utility vehicle to power or tow a blower to windrow leaves for collection or push them back into the edge of woodland.

If you can use your tractor for the task, be sure to look at the Imants RotoBlast available in the UK from Campey Turfcare Systems. It attaches to the three-point linkage but is mounted on a wheeled chassis to allow it to follow contours while maintaining a constant nozzle height above the ground.

The wheels can be inverted to revert to a fully-mounted option if required. The RotoBlast can be matched to compacts up to 35hp and produces 120cu m/min air volume at 540rpm.

Agrimetal manufactures a range of large Turbine blowers, supplied in the UK by JSM Distribution. It includes tractor-mounted low-decibel models, covering 16-45hp or more and boasting dynamically balanced aluminium impellers that require less energy. Standard specification includes hydraulically operated air deflectors controlled from the operator's seat. Agrimetal also makes a ride-on debris blower.

If you would prefer to tow the blower, look at the engine-powered Turbine blower by Agrimetal. It has a 23hp Kohler Command Pro engine and 14in diameter fan. Chute rotation is through a full 360 degs and is operated via a wireless remote control. JSM Distribution has reduced the UK list price from £5,850 to £5,395 + VAT.

JSM sales manager David Timms says: "Following great success and sales growth in North America, Agrimetal has increased production. This has resulted in a small saving on manufacturing costs due to more efficient work practices. We recognise that the current financial climate is still quite challenging for most, so we are delighted to be able to pass on this saving to the UK market."

Having taken on the distributorship of Buffalo Turbine blowers last year, Lloyds & Co (Letchworth) has extended its offering this autumn with the addition of two new models of this American brand.

The Cyclone PTO and the more budget priced Cyclone 8000 have a lightweight, rigid, welded, tubular-steel frame. The Cyclone PTO sees belts, pulley, jackshafts and pillow blocks replaced by a direct drive gearbox, resulting in a debris blower weighing just 108kg. The Cyclone 8000 is a tow model, equipped with a Honda engine and designed to suit many budgets. It is priced at £3,750 + VAT.

For use with an out-front mower, take a look at the Whisper Twister from Wiedenmann. It is relatively quick and simple to attach to most makes of mower and, if you have one that has seen better days, you might consider a permanent match. Another blower suitable to most popular models of out-front is the Tornado TM240 from Turfmech. In addition, this Staffordshire-based company offers three tractor-mounted models.

Gambetti UK offers mounted and towed blowers as well its sprayer range, while Ransomes supplies the US-built Smithco Windstar tractor-mounted blower. Be sure to check out the four Trilo blowers from The Grass Group - the brand has a long history and is well known for its debris collection systems.
