Marshall, who is waiting for completion of the refinancing of the garden-centre chain, said: "It is slow until people start buying Christmas trees. Retailing is hard work right now. But if we can stop journalists from turning everything into a crisis it will improve things.
"People are very frightened about their future. Property prices are down, but for the 99 per cent of people who aren't moving that doesn't matter. Food prices, mortgages, interest rates and inflation are all down. For most, life should carry on as normal."
He added: "The past couple of months have been very difficult. For garden centres there's not been a single thing people have had to buy until Christmas trees now."
