Prince sets trend for box substitute

Teucrium x lucidrys is replacing box thanks to the Prince Charles effect, according to Buckingham Nurseries & Garden Centre publicity manager Chris Day.

The prince had to remove all his box from the walled garden at Highgrove in 2010. He replaced it with Teucrium x lucidrys, a cross between wall germander (T. chamaedrys) and sage-leaved germander (T. lucidum).

Day has called the plant "Charlie's Choice" and said it is proving popular as a box substitute, along with Ilex crenata. He added that the centre is now selling Bayer's Fungus Fighter Disease Control concentrate new formulation as a box blight control.

He said he believes that the rose market is moving away from branded product to cheaper bareroot stock such as the £6.99 rose of the year 'For Your Eyes Only'.
