Following last year's silver-gilt award-winning Tropical Courtyard Garden at Harrogate Spring Flower Show 2015, Huddersfield-based Paxman Landscapes went one better at the show which finished on Sunday.

"Skyline: A Yorkshire Roof Garden" took gold, one of only four gardens to do so. The design and concept was devised in partnership with Kilmartin Plowman and Partners Architects (KPP) of Leeds.

The garden will eventually be translated and transferred to Goose House, the Plowman’s own private redevelopment project. Helen and Tony Plowman have been working on this redevelopment project in York since 2014.

Justin Paxman said: "The months of planning, careful specification and selection of materials and plants and meticulous attention to detail have definitely paid off.  We are so pleased to have gone one step further this year, gaining our first Gold Award, and took great pleasure in sharing this with thousands of visitors and garden enthusiast during the Show itself."

Paxman Landscapes worked with sponsors and suppliers including The York Handmade Brick Company, Siga Natural Slate, Stellar Signs of Leeds and Hard York Quarries.

There were 12 gardens along The Avenue, with more large-scale professional designs this year to wow visitors, plus three Community Spirit entries.

Themes included a bubbling waterside garden, a writer’s retreat and a ‘take home’ design for a small space. Nature also features strongly among the designs including a wildlife haven and a community plot promoting nature’s healing powers.

Gold Awards in the professional category also went to: Sheffield-based Bestall & Co Landscape Design, who also won best in show, for Perennial Embrace, a modern space for relaxation and contemplation   and It’s Still Me, a garden for people living with dementia, by students at Riseholme and Bishop Burton Colleges.

In the Community Spirit category, there was gold for Horticap, of Harrogate, who created a tribute to the 70th anniversary of VE Day with a garden called The Beaches, The Fields and The Streets.

Other garden winners included:

  • John Cavill Gardens & Design and Dean Brown from Barton on Humber won silver gilt
