Hectarage was 475ha compared to 520ha in 2014 on 1 June 2015.
In hardy nursery stock, hectarage was up 9.5 per cent to 11,266ha from 10,287ha.
Christmas tree hectarage on commercial agriculture holdings was 1,897ha, up 0.4 per cent. Perennial herbaceous plants was at 354ha, down 11.1 per cent from 398ha.
Bulbs and flowers grown in the open was up to 6,182ha from 5,253ha. Other hardy nursery stock was 2,833ha, up from 2,747ha.
Some 25,000 commercial holdings were asked to complete the survey and results are based on almost 16 thousand responses, representing a response rate of 62 per cent.
Commercial holdings are those farms with a significant level of activity. The utilised agricultural area (UAA) in England decreased by 0.6 per cent between 2014 and 2015 and now stands at 8.9 million hectares.
Horticulture makes up three per cent of England's croppable area.
