The five gardens were designed by RHS Judge and APL member Steve Smith of Shore Landscapes and built in five days by novice landscapers, in a new joint venture between The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) the Landscape Skills Academy and the Harrogate show, organised by the North of England Horticultural Society.
The gardens formed Green Lane, built to depict a street of five back gardens showing how owners can make the most of a small space. Practical themes ranged from alfresco dining and container planting to communal grow your own and child-friendly plots. They were all created in the spirit of the done in line with the HTA/APL/GIMB campaign "Love The Plot You Got".
All the gardens won silver awards. Mentoring was provided by Steve, Jody Lidgard, "Bespoke Outdoor Spaces and Landscape Skills Academy, and Nick Edwards of Nicholas Edwards Gardens.
APL national business manager Phil Tremayne said: "This is the pre-cursor to what we hope will be an annual event, giving young students and apprentices the opportunity to showcase their talents under expert guidance in front of a fantastic audience."
