Barton Grange managing director Guy Topping said: "Northern Liners is shutting this summer and we're selling off the stock. I'm optimistic we'll rent it to another horticultural company. Garden Centre Plants we'll keep operating."

Garden Centre Plants, of Barton near Preston in Lancashire, is on about 10ha of land with 0.8ha of glass and 1.2ha of multi-spans.

The Northern Liner Company is at Pilling, near Preston, which is about 20km away, with Carr Lane Nursery on 2ha with 0.55ha of glass plus ancillary buildings. Nearby Fernleigh Nursery is on almost 5ha with 1.8ha of glass and more than a hectare of multi-spans plus ancillary buildings.

Topping added that he is also optimistic about securing planning permission for further development to Barton Grange Garden Centre in July.

The £6m "Flower Bowl" leisure development at its garden centre site in Brock, Lancashire, includes a curling rink, bowling lanes, cinema, golf and catering.
