Defra secretary of state Hilary Benn to quiz Department for Business, Innovation & Skills over block on funds for training

Friday, 27 November 2009

HTA director general David Gwyther told Defra secretary of state Hilary Benn last week that hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of funding streams are being held up for training schemes in level 2 and level 3 at the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (DBIS).

Benn said he would like more information on the subject and agreed to write a letter on behalf of the industry to the DBIS regarding the funding being blocked.

Gwyther added: "Funding has gone into a dark hole. We've been told it will come in the future but this has been going on for 12 months. Benn will take it up with the DBIS.

"We can fund this ourselves but have no access to government funding. We have to offer it subsidised by us at a huge price. It costs £300-£400 per head per student and we're looking at a low seven-figure sum for the industry to get to grips with it."
