New variegated Impatiens wins visitor's choice award at Ball Colegrave open days

A striking new Impatiens has swept the board in the Ball Colegrave blue flag awards, singled out as the top variety by trade and public alike.

‘Masquerade’ has variegated foliage and scarlet flowers, and was the clear winner in a year when novelty patio plants dominated the voting.

The awards are decided by visitors to the West Adderbury trial grounds, each of whom plant a blue flag in the plant they like the most.

Masquerade topped the trade and public vote and led the overall top five which included National Plant Show winner Begonia ‘Glowing Embers’, Begonia Million Kisses ‘Honeymoon’, Petunia ‘Black Velvet’ and Osteospernum ‘Voltage Yellow’.

Masquerade was found two years ago on a family nursery in the Midlands when the owners discovered a variegated shoot on one of their Busy Lizzie seedlings.

The foliage is lime and gold lined, offering interest before the scarlet flowers open in mid summer.

It grows to a height of 15cm and spreads approximately 25-30cm with a creeping and cascading habit, lending itself well to pots and baskets.

It will be available in a Ball 84 plug tray in weeks 8-22.

Over 1,100 blue flags were placed this year during the trade and public open days.

More than 2,500 trade visitors attended the events which culminated last week.

Marketing manager Stuart Lowen said it had "proved to be one of the best displays ever with a wonderful attendance of customers".
