New rotary deck mower fleet helps grounds care team reduce operating costs

Grounds staff have managed to cut operating costs by buying a fleet of rotary deck mowers that will also mulch and clear snow.

Perth & Kinross Council environment service chose the John Deere 1565 Series II front-rotary mowers, used for public parks, housing estates and burial grounds, on cost and ongoing maintenance issues.

Assistant operations manager Nigel Taylor said: "Like many councils we needed to reduce our operating costs and chose rotary deck models to replace our old fleet as part of our overall budget drive.

"We were previously using 13 ride-on triple cylinder mowers for the main grass cutting operations in our area, which covers over 2,000 square miles, making it one of the largest of its kind in the country.

"We’ve had plenty of wet weather and you want to avoid clumping of the grass, which looks untidy. The quality of cut is of a perfectly acceptable standard against cylinder machines and we’ve had no real complaints."

All six machines will be fitted with mulching kit to improve quality of cut and finish and all will be used to clear snow clear on pavements to extend their use all year round. Double A Trading in Cupar, Fife supplied the kit.
