The square was designed by the city council's award-winning landscape team, led by principal landscape architect Kevin Johnson.

Development work was carried out by Siglion, which is a joint venture between Carillion and Sunderland City Council and is managed by Igloo Regeneration.

Keel Square celebrates Sunderland's shipbuilding and industrial heritage, incorporating several works of art including the Keel Line, a paving feature which stretches 292m, the length of the longest ship ever built in Sunderland, and the Propellors of the City sculpture, which is engraved with the names of local shipyard workers.

St Mary's Way boulevard, which adjoins the square, was realigned as part of the revamp.
