MuckTruck PowerDrive

This is a go-anywhere, go-faster solution to load handling. Its host of attachments makes it truly versatile and it doesn't cost the earth — it just shifts it.

Designed and built in the UK by Deesign of Devon, the MuckTruck is classified as a power barrow or mini-dumper. It is fitted with a 5.5hp Honda engine. This machine has plenty of guts and is a reliable starter. And it has clearly been built for a rugged outdoor life — the construction is top quality. It shouts strength and durability. The engine and cables are well protected, yet all parts are readily accessible for maintenance and servicing.
The MuckTruck is narrow — less than 70cm wide — so it will fit easily through a standard gate or doorway. It has a carrying capacity of 250kg. This is a beast with muscle, yet it’s a dream for getting to the most seemingly inaccessible places. What’s more, it knows no boundaries when it comes to rough terrain.
The MuckTruck is easy enough to steer. But first, having used the Honda Power Carrier recently, our tester must forget the routine of gripping the left handle to turn the machine to the left and the right for turning right. With the MuckTruck, the right handle tips the skip. The tester quickly adjusts and finds that the balance designed into the MuckTruck is so precise that lifting the handles just a little gives all the manoeuvrability required. With the skip catch released, a little nudge tips the barrow forward to empty.
The controls are simple. There are four forward speeds, from 0.8km/h to 5.6km/h — a very good walking pace. There is also a reverse gear. On the left there is a clutch lever and hand throttle. All operating instructions are clearly printed on the machine. Operation is very smooth. “It’s straightforward to use and is capable of travelling at a cracking pace, even over really rough ground,” confirms our tester.
Accessories include skip extension to give 30 per cent extra capacity, a brick/ block gripper, 95-litre spray tank with hand lance or boom and ball hitch for towing trailers or moving caravans. There is also a loading ramp, allowing the MuckTruck to be emptied straight into a skip — a must for anyone clearing rubble — and a flat bed that makes easy work of shifting paving slabs and garden ornaments. Considerable thought has gone into attachment design, so there should be no time lost changing from one accessory to another.
There are oodles of applications for this power barrow — large gardens, estates, landscape schemes, construction sites and anywhere that power is needed to shift or tow. “It’s an ideal machine for landscapers moving rocks and materials,” says our tester. The price is also impressive and it should pay for itself in no time.
