One of the UK’s leading seed companies looks set to swallow a rival.
A Mr Fothergill’s representative said its offer for Unwins, for an undisclosed sum, was “exciting”.
Fothergill’s stated: “Mr Fothergill’s Seeds has recently made a formal offer to purchase the trading business of Unwins Seeds and SE Marshall & Co, encompassing their existing UK operations.
“This offer has been made with a short period of due diligence to determine if the offer to purchase can proceed to completion.
“We regret that no further comment can be made at this time but will issue a full press statement if matters progress.”
Unwins was set to move its Histon, Cambridgeshire, operation to its Chester base, though staff oppose the shift (HW, 22 April).
Unwins representative Colin Hambidge said only managing director Mark Taylor, who did not return HW’s calls, could comment. Seed firms Ball Colegrave, Suttons and Thompson & Morgan said the move was news to them.
