MP criticises the rising cost of seeds

MP Brian Donohoe has highlighted a significant rise in prices in seed catalogues.

An MP has slammed seed companies for inflating their seed prices. Secretary of the House of Commons All-Party Parliamentary Gardening and Horticulture Group, Brian Donohoe MP said: “I get all the seed catalogues at the beginning of the year and there has been a distinct increase in prices for 2006.” Donohoe highlighted that Thompson & Morgan has increased packets of some seeds by 10p. He said: “That is a significant hike in price and I appeal to consumers to keep a close watch.” Bentley Seeds importer Mike Wilson believes that the increase in price has occurred because the seed market is contracting rapidly, and companies are trying to retain value from less volume. He added: “We keep it simple and steer away from expensive stands and point of sale. We keep our overheads down and our prices have stayed the same for 2006.” Thompson & Morgan was un-available for comment.
