Movie and dining inspire Diarmuid Gavin's hanging garden proposal for RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2011

Garden designer and TV presenter Diarmuid Gavin has said his creation for this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show is inspired by 3D blockbuster Avatar and dining phenomenon Restaurant in the Sky.

Gavin will create a hanging garden over the show. The floor and roof will be covered in a carpet of thick, vibrant green grasses, while 60 small ponds, loosely based on the Giant's Causeway in Ireland, will reflect the suspended garden above.

The Irish Tourist Board is sponsoring Gavin and following the Chelsea show the garden will be dismantled and rebuilt for the two-week Cork Midsummer Festival in June. The garden will then be incorporated into a proposed new park for the city.

Gavin said: "It was important for me to have this sponsored in Ireland. It's something positive and unashamedly contemporary. I wanted to create a garden that acknowledged the aristocratic tradition of showing off and seeking to inspire awe or debate."
