Middlesbrough looks east to Holland’s West 8

Dutch firms collaborate to work on design of new high-concept public square

Landscape architect West 8 is firming up plans for a high-concept public square in front of a showcase art gallery in Middlesbrough. The Dutch firm is working with Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects, which won planning permission last year for the building, a giant wedge of textured stone and glass walls. The square will form the main focus for the town centre and early proposals included grass and a grid-like hard landscape sweeping up to the showcase building. There will be clusters of trees and hard landscape. Exhibition space, ancillary rooms and public facilities will spill out into the landscape and the designers aim to make outdoor areas and the building dovetail seamlessly together. Building dates have not been confirmed.
