Michael Holmes dies, aged 70

Michael Holmes OBE, former chairman of the NFU's national horticulture executive committee and a passionate standard bearer for the horticulture sector for more than 40 years, has died at the age of 70.

Holmes chaired the executive for seven years until 2003, and served as the Lincolnshire and South Humber delegate on the horticulture committee for 18 years until 1996.

He was also a member of the Horticultural Research International board, a founder member of the Horticultural Development Council and a director of the Processed Vegetable Growers' Association.

But it was as an NFU council member that he made a big impact, on agricultural wages, public procurement and legal assistance.
