McDermott targets TV garden shopping revival

YouGarden managing director Peter McDermott has said he hopes to take TV garden shopping back to where it was before the demise of BID TV in 2014.

YouGarden supplied BID and has now found another TV channel to work with after Ideal World and Thompson & Morgan split.

"It was a fast-moving situation with T&M," said McDermott. "We've now been supplying Ideal World for one month and it's going very well. I'm optimistic will be a long-term arrangement."

T&M lost its exclusive supplier status then split with the channel, as it had with QVC two years ago. Ideal World, which has James Carter running plant buying, is still seeking new suppliers.

McDermott added: "With multichannel, for every company going forwards one has gone backwards over the past five years. I don't think there's been a quantum increase. Multichannel remains the same.

"In garden TV BID was there and no longer is, QVC is probably a bit more than it was and Ideal World has shrunk to where it was a few years ago, so the position of garden shopping TV compared to five years ago overall is there are fewer plants sold. But in five years time, I'm certain it will get back up."
