The lecture - Jam and Knitting in the Urban Fabric: Thoughts on Re-building Communities - will be held on 18 May. The RIBA Trust Annual Lecture is given by a non-architect on a subject of direct relevance to the built environment.
Previous speakers include Jonathan Dimbleby and Alain de Botton. HRH the Prince of Wales delivered the 2009 lecture for RIBA's 175th anniversary.
McCloud has recently spent time in the slums of Mumbai for a Channel 4 documentary series, where he found that respect for public space was greater than in the suburbs.
He will draw on his own experience of regeneration in the town of Castleford, where the community worked with landscape architects to improve their environment. "The construction industry wants to get things built," said McCloud. "But place is what underpins proper social and cultural sustainability."
