The £14.99 book is by a landscape architect who taught at the School of Landscape at the University of Manchester from 1972 to 1990.
As director of landscape studies at Machester, he established the first master's degree course in land management in Europe.
The book contains 100 illustrations and uses "a unique collection of documentary sources" to show the park's historical development.
The park received Heritage Lottery Funding for a restoration as part of a programme to make east Manchester a 'Sports City' early this century.
But Ruff says parks are "once again in jeopardy thanks to cut backs in local authority funding.
He says the book provides a "timely reminder of their importance as new ways are sought to ensure their future".
