You will not find a brushcutter quieter than this. It has no engine, but it is aimed at the commercial market - specifically for noise-sensitive areas such as cemeteries, around schools and residential housing estates. Professional gardeners should also appreciate the whirr rather than whine of this 36v cordless brushcutter.

The Makita BBC231 uses a 2.6Ah Li-ion battery to power a brushless DC motor to drive the long shaft, drive head and cutting head. Normal running is at 5,000rpm but there is little extra noise even when pushing the cutting head up to 7,000rpm. Also setting this machine apart from all others is the reverse function - useful for removing any debris that has built up around the gearbox. But does it have the guts to do a job in the commercial world?

"I've never used a battery trimmer in my life and I am pleasantly surprised," Creber admits. "Starting is really easy - just press the activation button and the trigger - and it is very, very quiet."
The team finds this brushcutter capable of trimming around trees and tackling normal ground, although they wonder how it would cope with denser vegetation and brash. Everyone agrees that it is nice not to have fumes but ouch, the price hurts.

The battery can be recharged in around 22 minutes and that should give a running time of 30 minutes, depending on conditions. An LED display adjacent to the speed control indicates battery operation and motor temperature. In the event of the motor overheating, it switches off for protection.

The day started dull and cold but became warm and sunny during the morning. Grass in an area of woodland was tackled with all the machines.
