The Raspberry Breeding Consortium also includes, Spanish producer Onubafruit, UK producer WB Chambers and East Malling Services which is the commercial division of East Malling Research.
This international 'Rubus Breeding Consortium Agreement' has been signed at East Malling, Kent, to generate exciting new raspberry varieties for tomorrow’s consumers and gardeners.
Lubera has the exclusivity to supply EMR raspberry varieties for the home garden market worldwide. Through selection from the breeding trials at EMR, Lubera has and will continue to tailor the needs of the home gardener from the direct contact and information gathered via the consumer.
Markus Kobelt, founder and breeder at Lubera, said: "Adding this genepool to our existing raspberry breeding in Switzerland gives us the broadest and most interesting raspberry pipeline in the gardening industry. Together with East Malling we will introduce cultivars with better quality, versatile architecture and a variety of colours and flavours. And of course ... selecting raspberries in the UK we also feel closer to our UK customers."
Under this new five-year agreement, worth nearly £400,000, existing genetic material at East Malling, including parental breeding lines and advanced selections already in trial, will all be utilised to produce a new generation of raspberries for the professional and amateur markets.
The first releases under this agreement are like to come as early as 2017 and would include two new primocane cultivars of outstanding fruit quality and two amateur varieties; one dwarf for container growing and a purple-fruited autumn berry.
Raspberry breeding at EMR had been underpinned by EMR, the East Malling Trust and Lubera since 2008.
