The upkeep and care of the green areas on Lewisham Homes estates was previously provided by external contractor Glendale, which is halfway through a 10-year contract to deliver green space maintenance across the London borough.
However the contract allowed for the housing element - representing around 15 per cent of the overall Glendale contract - to be withdrawn.
The work is now being delivered by an in-house team of 26 Lewisham Homes gardeners. Each team will tailor the work they carry out according to what residents want to see in their areas.
Resident board chair Julia Cotton commented: "We're looking forward to reinvigorating tired spaces and excited about making this happen by involving residents. They will play a key role in monitoring the quality of the grounds maintenance service on their estates."
More than 500 residents gave their views on what the new service should look like through drop-in sessions and surveys during the consultation earlier this year.
The feedback has led to changes such as having the same gardeners working on each estate on a fortnightly basis, in response to requests for a more regular service.
