Landscape firm Gardenmakers benefits from high-end domestic projects

High-end domestic projects are helping landscape firm the Gardenmakers to stay afloat in the downturn - and helped make 2009 one of its most successful years.

One of last year's schemes, a £180,000 garden near Stratford-upon-Avon, picked up the best landscaping project award at the Hard Landscaping Show. Highly commended was awarded to Jackson's Landscape Design.

The Gardenmakers director David Sewell said: "We have developed the York stone paving side of things to such a degree we do tend to get bigger projects. There seems to be a lot less competition at this end of the market."

The firm, named the Association of Professional Landscapers supreme winner last year, has seen inquiries pick up in the past three weeks after the bad weather earlier in the year.

Sewell added that the award could help increase its reputation. "Winning awards doesn't get you business, but it is a very nice weapon in your armoury," he said. "It is proof of your ability, but you still have to get your foot through the door first."
