Banks could take over from current president Giles Coode-Adams when he retires from the voluntary post in July next year. The RHS will elect its new president at its AGM on 1 July.
Banks specialised in the restoration of historic landscapes and set up her own business, Elizabeth Banks Associates, in 1985. The firm now continues as Robert Myers Associates following her retirement from practice in 2006.
Banks has a long working association with the RHS, dating back to the original masterplan for Rosemoor in 1987. She has designed five Chelsea Flower Show gardens, four of which were awarded Gold Medals, and has been an RHS garden judge since 2005.
She was elected to council in 2007 and is also a member of the Forestry Commission arboreta advisory committee for Westonbirt and Bedgebury.
