The children’s ticket is one of a range of new ticketing options being introduced alongside the changes to be introduced on 22nd April.A Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew representative said: "We are introducing a new ticketing structure that offers visitors a range of options and price points to access Kew Gardens. This includes a discounted Tuesdays pilot for the residents of the London Boroughs of Richmond upon Thames, Wandsworth, Hounslow, Hammersmith & Fulham and Kingston upon Thames; cheaper entry after 4pm during the peak summer months; the return of our winter discount, a modest entry fee for children and a competitively priced family ticket. The adult ticket price will be held at £15 for another year, which represents only a 50p rise in the last four years.
Kew said the changes bring Kew Gardens in line with many other paid for attractions and will enable visitors to plan a visit to the gardens at a time that best suits their budget.
A representative added: "Revenue from admission charges is incredibly important to us as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is increasingly reliant on self-generated income to deliver outstanding horticulture, provide our visitors with an inspiring, rewarding experience and fund our vital scientific research into the world’s plants and fungi."
From 22 April, entry for children aged 4 -16 years to Kew Gardens will cost £2.50 if purchased online and £3.50 at the gate.
The cost of a children's ticket to Kew has been reintroduced at the same price it was over 14 years ago.
The representative said: "This charge affects less than a third of the total number of children who visit the Gardens, as the vast majority visit through the schools programme, and unlimited year-round entry for two children (plus a family friend) is included in the family membership packages.
"Educating the next generation to care about plants is of vital importance to Kew, yet in order to grow our education programme, remain competitive and offer our family visitors an experience equal to those other attractions that charge for children, we need to raise revenue to be able to invest in new, exciting experiences for our younger visitors."
