Prior to joining RBG Kew, she was interim director of marketing at the Design Council.
She said: "I am absolutely delighted to have been offered this role at an exciting time for Kew and am thrilled to be joining such a prestigious organisation. I very much look forward to working with the wider team on developing both the commercial and marketing opportunities that I know are present."
Her career to date has included experience in commercial marketing, including Premier Inn, followed by seven years as head of marketing at Historic Royal Palaces, then as commercial director for Royal Museums Greenwich. During this time she has increased commercial revenue and delivered enhanced visitor programmes. In her new role she will be responsible for all marketing and communications, brand, design, digital media and commercial activities including events and festivals programming and will work with colleagues across the organisation to strengthen the overall visitor offer at Kew Gardens.
Richard Deverell, director of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew said: "Sandra has considerable experience and an intricate understanding of the nature of challenges and opportunities facing organisations such as RBG Kew - in particular the need to balance commercial growth with respect for the organisation’s purpose and heritage. I am confident she will bring original thinking, sound judgement and a focus on delivery to the various opportunities we face."
