July figures reveal sharp increase in visits to gardens

Heritage and botanic garden visitor numbers have jumped this summer by more than half against the same time last year after a slow start to the season.

Kew said figures for July were up 57 per cent compared to the same period last year, with 18,500 tickets sold for the IncredEdibles summer festival.

National Botanic Garden of Wales said it would reach 2013 targets after a slow start, partly thanks to the first two weeks of July being twice as busy as at the same time in 2012.

Aberglasney head gardener Joseph Atkin said season ticket holders had reached a record level and monthly visitor figures are the best in four years, with associated plant sales spend "rocketing".

In July Lowther Castle had an increase of 1,000 visitors compared to July 2012.
