Johnston rejoins "more proactive and coordinated" Arboricultural Association

Dr Mark Johnston, one of the most senior figures in UK arboriculture, has rejoined the Arboricultural Association, praising its new focus exemplified by its recent conference.

Johnston, who is research fellow at Myerscough College and author of the influential Trees in Town II report, had previously criticised the association, of which he had been a member since the mid-1970s, for failing to promote the report's objectives.

But this week he said: "I have seen some very encouraging signs of the AA adopting a far more proactive approach to the international and strategic aspects of urban tree management."

He added: "Also the AA is working much more closely with other organisations in the sector such as the Institute of Chartered Foresters, which is really helping to develop a more coordinated and unified approach to industry representation."

Welcoming Johnston's return, Arboricultural Association chief executive Karen Martin said: " We are continuing to promote and consolidate the aims and objectives of the Association with a particular emphasis on the organisation being the 'Voice of Arboriculture'.

"Mark's renewed commitment will help us all to maintain a coherent strategy for the rejuvenated Arboricultural Association and the sector in general."
