Job Done - Design and installation of school recreational area in Harrow

Project: Artificial grass for Whitmore High School
Client: Kier
Contractor: Agripower Contractors and Kier

Plans for this school break zone bounded on three sides by three-storey buildings and with a the surface that was to be elevated above the surrounding tarmac access paths, had to take into account ongoing maintenance costs.

"Initial thoughts were that maintenance costs (for a natural turf) would be too high, especially given the shading and awkward access," said Mark Swatton, contracts manager for Agripower. "The only real option was to look at artificial surfacing."

Agripower Contractors and Kier worked on a final design that included a 50mm stone layer, laid underneath an 18mm Schmitz foam pad. The selected grass surface, Lano Easy Lawn Living +, was based on the feel and aesthetic appearance of the carpet.

"With the facility being opened just two days after laying the grass there was no room for error," said Swatton. "Kier management and general staff were pragmatic and helpful, enabling a speedy and painless construction phase."
