Japanese indoor grower supplies 12,000 lettuces a day to supermarkets "within two hours"

One of the world's largest vertical farms is now producing 12,000 lettuces a day, which do not have to be washed before eating due to the hygienic growing environment.

Trials began in March last year at Tokyo company Innovatus' 1,850mFuji Farm, one of the world's largest closed-environment, vertical farms, where five varieties of lettuce are grown under Philips GreenPower LED lighting.

Director Hitoshi Wada said: "The quality and control it has given us with our lettuce crops has enabled us to get lettuces to Tokyo supermarkets in just two hours after shipment. Furthermore, as the lettuces are grown and packaged in an extremely hygienic environment, there is no need to wash them before eating."

Meanwhile Japanese prepared foods supplier Delicious Cook has also employed Philips GreenPower LED production module in three layers in a total cultivation area of roughly 80m2 to grow more unusual herbs including edible chrysanthemums since last October.

Its facilities manager Katsuhiro Takahashi said: "Now, Delicious Cook can rely upon its own high-quality produce, home-grown indoors all year round and avoid sourcing it from external suppliers."

Philips Lighting's Horticulture business leader Udo van Slooten said: "Vertical farms are an ideal way to meet this growing demand for safe, fresh food especially in a country with highly urbanised areas where space is at a premium and Japan is one of the fastest growing markets for our horticultural LED systems."
