Jackson Fencing competition will see winning Society of Garden Designers entry backed for Hampton Court

Members for the Society of Garden Designers have the opportunity to design a garden at this year's RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, by winning sponsorship with Jackson Fencing.

The Kent-based company will pay for the garden and for an as-yet unnamed BALI-registered landscape company to build it in the latest of its garden design competitions.

Designs – for a 100 square metre plot - will be judged by Society of Garden Designers (SGD) chair Philippa O’Brien and chair of the SGD adjudication panel Paul Hensey. Dave Green of the RHS and Jacksons marketing manager Louise Tomlin will join the panel.

Tomlin started the competitions five years ago.

"The idea was to pick four designs and build four show gardens here with the winning design. It was so successful, it’s run year-on-year. We’ve got seven all in all and we’ve branched out to satellite gardens like a World Cup themed garden at the Ashford Designer Outlet by Amy Roberts."

Previous competitions have been won by designers who have become very successful, including Matt Childs, Helen Elks-Smith and O’Brien herself. Last year Sally Perigo and Annie Berriman joined Roberts as winners.

"It’s a hotbed of burgeoning talent, they go on to great things. We can say we’ve had gold medal-winning RHS designers," Tomlin said.

"This year I was trying to find something different. It seemed a shame to get rid of the gardens we had here because they are lovely. Knowing a lot of garden designers now I know that one of the things they really want to do is have a show garden at Hampton or Chelsea."

Tomlin is not revealing the budget but is telling designers to "be sensible".

She added: "It’s been good fun, I’m looking forward to seeing how it ends up.

Interested designers have until 28 February to enter.
