IPPS event demonstrates grafting techniques to growers

Nursery stock growers and propagators from across Europe were brought together by the International Plant Propagators' Society (IPPS) this month at New Place Nurseries, West Sussex, to see grafting techniques demonstrated by leading practitioners.

Growers from the UK, Ireland, Greece and Hungary saw demonstrations by: New Place Nurseries head of tree production Andrew Mount; Belgian nurseryman Carlos Verhelst; Chris Lane, who runs his own nursery in Kent; and David Hide of Walberton Nursery, West Sussex.

The demonstrators then helped growers to hone their own skills on live material.

IPPS member Chris Lane demonstrated the technique of bench grafting onto pot-grown rootstocks at the event.

Abi Rayment, who organised the event, said: "The workshop meant growers could tap into the skills of some of our leading grafters."

- The IPPS held a similar grafting workshop at the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, on 30 January.
