Industry mourns a 'true plantsman'

Tributes have poured in for Charles Notcutt, who has died at the age of 81.

HTA chief executive officer Carol Paris said: "I am deeply saddened to hear about the death of Charles Notcutt. A true plantsman, Charles has done so much for the industry throughout his career. A lovely chap who will be sorely missed by many."

Notcutt joined the family firm of Notcutts of Woodbridge, Suffolk, in 1958, later becoming managing director (1964-99) and chairman (1974-2006). In July 2008 he completed 50 years with the firm before retiring from the board to become non-executive president.

He was a member of the HTA council (1959-71), the first chairman of the HTA garden centre group (1966-68) and involved in the formation of the joint HTA/NFU nursery stock committee (member 1974-87, chairman 1976-80).

He received the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour in Notcutts' centenary year of 1997 and was an Institute of Horticulture president (1988-89). He received an OBE in 1993 for services to the horticultural industry.
