The twin-axle Challenger G26106 comes under Indespension’s Goods Trailers range. It’s got SuperRide full beam suspension, is three metres long, 1.75m wide and has fixed sides of 33cm. A Ransomes rotary or standard triple fits snugly, but this trailer could take a wide range of materials and other machinery. There are integral lashing points to secure the load and the wheels are on the outside, rather than underneath, so no room is wasted.
“No wheel arches inside means there’s plenty of space in this trailer and the loading height is nice and low — that’s good for mowing equipment,” confirms our tester.
The trailer has a maximum gross capacity of 2.6 tonnes giving it a carrying capacity of around 1.9 tonnes, depending on the optional extras you go for. That’s one of the things we like about this trailer — you just specify what you need. If you want to carry clippings and leaves, specify the mesh cage kit. If you want to carry ladders, specify the ladder rack and there’s a winch if hauling is anticipated. But one of the options we suggest you look at is the spring-assisted tailgate — especially if you are looking to lessen the risk of back injuries.
The model we inspect has a large ramp tail. It’s 1.8m tall so driving ride-on mowers and other kit on to the trailer is easy. But isn’t a metal gate measuring 1.75m by 1.8m going to be heavy to lift and close? This is where the springs help. “You can lift this gate with one hand and very little effort,” says one reviewer.
And, because they are wired to the frame, you are not going to lose the pegs that secure the tail in the shut position. Optional props on the ramp increase stability for loading. They are simple but they work.
Security is a major issue with any trailer but Indespension has done it’s best to tackle the subject by building-in the TripleLock Security Coupling as standard. This means the trailer is always locked by default and can only be removed from the towing vehicle by the key holder. “You don’t have to remember to do it and you don’t have to worry about operators forgetting to lock it,” says an observer.
The locks themselves have security caps to make sure a would-be thief doesn’t attempt to remove them.
Maintenance tends to be the other big issue with trailers. A tester points out that lights and registration plates at the rear are especially vulnerable when contracting crews are in a hurry. On the Challenger G26106, however, the lighting unit is set back from the tailgate and is protected by metal plates to the sides. And if it does get broken, the unit is simple and cheap to replace. Just unplug the electric lead, undo two bolts and replace with a new unit at a cost of just £9.50 ex VAT. One of our testers reckons this should prove of particular benefit to local authorities and contractors where time and money are of the essence.
The other end of the electric lead is another area for potential damage. It’s all too easy to get it caught in the handbrake. But on this trailer the front part of the lead is short and fits into a plug-in connector.
All in all, we reckon the Challenger G26106 is a nice piece of kit, not too expensive and likely to be of benefit to contractors and local authority crews that frequently load and unload machinery.
