Can I still buy a fiddle spreader? I would need a professional one.

I haven't heard that expression for years and assume you mean the hand-cranked type of spreader.

The very nature of this type of spreader can suggest it is for amateur use but it can prove useful for spreading small quantities of fertiliser or grass seed in small areas. However, when we tested one at HW we found the weight of "fiddle" plus fertiliser put a strain on the neck - so don't put too much material in at a time.

Sherriff Amenity supplies the heavy-duty Prizelawn spreader with a 9kg capacity and a 4m throw, at £118 plus VAT.

Coalville-based Vitax distributes several Earthway Ev-N-Spred hand-cranked, chest-mounted spreaders - its professional 3100 model has 22.3 kg capacity.

Scotts Professional offers the Warren T-711, which has a spreading width of up to 6m and a capacity of 10kg. The unit's empty weight is just 3kg.
