Heseltine assures guests of Grower’s future

Grower in safe hands, says Haymarket chairman

Haymarket chairman Lord Heseltine told guests at last week’s Grower of the Year Awards that Grower was safe in the hands of the largest European horticulture publisher. Former Conservative deputy leader Heseltine said he tried to buy Grower in the 1960s but only succeeded last year, adding: “I’m thrilled the good Lord smiled upon us and enabled us to consolidate our position in horticulture.” He said that running publications such as What Kit?, Garden Retail and a suite of 10 German professional gardening magazines, Haymarket is the biggest horticulture publisher in Europe. The keen gardener added that with Haymarket’s resources within the existing structure of HW, Grower’s future was assured. NFU president Peter Kendall said growers had a negative image but added: “We believe the industry has a fantastic future and we’ll be championing a great sector for the industry.” He added that promoting the importance of agriculture and horticulture is one of the NFU’s key messages this year.
