Help demanded for woodland planting

More help is needed to overcome nimbyism if forests and woodlands are to be planted for the benefit of the economy, the environment and society, foresters and landowners told forestry minister Dan Rogerson at APF 2014 last week.

In a panel debate, Rogerson said the Government is 20 months into setting out policy for forestry and woodland and progress is being made in plant health, biosecurity and improving woodland through better skills and management. But the audience told him barriers to planting must be overcome.

"There is logjam between Government aspiration and what's happening on the ground," said one delegate.

Trees Please director Charles Beaumont added: "We just want to be able to plant modern forestry in the right place."
