Guide to Glee 2015

Welcome to the Garden Retail Guide to Glee 2015. The show reinvented itself last year, with new halls, an atrium space for growers and the aftermath of major wholesaler Solus going into administration, which led to many garden retailers looking for new suppliers at the show.

Companies such as Smart Garden and Crest Garden formed while new product offerings were developed by others including Scotts, Garland, Gardman, Westland and more. Expect to see more of developments on this theme this year.

Westland has taken over Sinclair, Scotts has jettisoned many of the Solus brands it bought last year (apart from Chapelwood bird food) and competition to supply independent garden centres is tougher than ever, which should lead to a good show.

Glee has eight dedicated product sectors aimed at garden retailers, landscapers and merchants. Garden Care covers growing media, compost, fertilisers, grow your own products, garden machinery, garden tools and accessories. Garden Design & Landscaping includes hard landscaping and aggregates, fencing, garden buildings and decorative accents such as pots, structures, soft landscaping, statuary, water features and timber supplies.

Garden Leisure features furniture for the garden, conservatory and indoors as well as barbecues, parasols, chimeneas, play equipment and camping. Plants includes nursery stock, bedding, houseplants, cut flowers, trees, shrubs, herbs and florist sundries from UK and international growers. Home, Gift & Clothing shows clothing ranges, picnic ware, seasonal decorations, games, toys and books.

Garden Retail Services covers electronic point of sale, shopfitting, display stands, structures, software solutions and garden centre design. The PetQuip Business Village will host 20 companies and the New Product Display section will feature the Glee and Retailers Choice awards.

In addition, there is a Food & Catering Zone, Knowledge Hub, Glee Innovators Zone, GIMA Business Village, Buyers Connect UKTI International Buyers' Centre and UKTI International Business Zone.

Away from the trade stands, catering seminars include Dobbies catering head Anthony Hester on baking trends and Wyevale Garden Centres' Jason Danciger on "bringing the Midas growth of casual high street dining to your garden centre" and the "symbiotic link between restaurants, coffee shops, farm shops and garden centre retailing".

In the retail seminar area, the HTA's Dave Denny will cover market segmentation, Hozelock will talk on the future of automatic watering, Chlorosphere will cover trends derived from beauty and cars and applying them to gardening, Edwin Meijer will talk about digital marketing and James Wong will speak about easy gardening on behalf of Fiskars.

Horticulture Week is official media partner to Glee. Over the next few pages we highlight a selection of the standout products that visitors can look forward to seeing at this year's show.

From the show director...

In many ways 2014 could be considered the perfect storm. The sun shone, consumers spent money and we made the decision to look at ways to create a brighter, more vitalised annual Glee exhibition. All these elements came together to create one of the strongest showcases for the UK garden retail market in several years.

The changes that were made to revitalise Glee were incredibly well received and have stood us in good stead for the 2015 show. The move to the new location within NEC halls 17-20 has not only created a vibrant layout, which is helping buyers to walk the show and ultimately source new suppliers, but it is also inspiring exhibitors to think differently about their stands.

As a result we are seeing more and more exhibitors book bigger stand spaces, as well as talking to us about how they can maximise their presence at the show. It is fantastic to work with so many focused and passionate companies, and I have no doubt that this enthusiasm will pay dividends when the show opens.

Glee is in great shape - in fact, it is close to capacity, with only a handful of stand spaces left to sell. We are well on track to see in excess of 530 exhibitors, including a phenomenal 350 new exhibitors and more than 75 international brands. I have no qualms in saying that Glee 2015 is set to the one of the most exciting shows for some time.
