Green award winner defends free carrier bags

St Albans-based garden centre Aylett Nurseries won the Green Award at the St Albans Chamber of Commerce Community Business Awards on 25 September. But director Adam Wigglesworth says his store will continue to offer free carrier bags to customers.

"We don't charge for them and we don't withhold them - we leave it to customers to make the choice, though all our bags are biodegradable," he said.

"Customers don't want to be greenwashed," he added. "But being green is better for the bottom line. You control your energy, your waste stream - it's part of good management. Staff feel happy too."

The garden centre is a member of the HTA's Environmental Management System programme, and has achieved BS 8555 for the second year running.
