The plant is claimed to be the "world's most popular flower on social media" and from a zero base in March 2014, has reached the Facebook figure through social media plant marketing by grower Blooms of Bressingham.
Since then marketer Alistair Lorimer has started using inbound marketing techniques to attract people to the Geranium Rozanne.com website.
He said: "The Facebook posts are part of this but in addition we are now posting regular blogs on the website. This has caused more activity which has made the website move up the Google search list. It is now ranked no.4 and no.20 in the USA and UK respectively, a significant rise over the last three months. Organic traffic to the website has risen 66 per cent in February and 123 per cent in March.
"The aim has always been to broaden the appeal of Geranium Rozanne outside the usual horticultural circles. Although it's early days, the use of social media and the internet seems to be having an effect; this weekend, in an email to their garden customers, Waitrose listed Rozanne on it's top seller list."
