Gardening TV could be in short supply in 2016

After a bumper year in 2015, gardening TV production companies have been unable to confirm new series for 2016.

In 2015, a record number of new gardening series started in January, but January 2016 has nothing scheduled.

Outline Productions, which made two series of The Great British Garden Revival, in 2014 and 2015, said it has no gardening for broadcast in 2016. The company also produced Sky’s Show Me Your Garden in 2015.

Lion TV (Big Dreams Small Spaces) could not confirm any gardening, nor could Spun Gold other than Love Your Garden.

Oxford Scientific Films (Plant Odyssey) could not reveal any new gardening shows either, nor could 12 Yard Productions (The Instant Gardener). Silver River (Big Allotment Challenge) is not making any new titles.

Gardeners’ World, RHS show coverage, the Beechgrove Garden and Love Your Garden are the only shows confirmed for 2016.

Presenter Alan Titchmarsh bemoaned a lack of gardening TV, caused by "whimsical" TV controllers this year.

Gardening is "under-represented on television", Gardener's World presenter Carol Klein has also said.  Carol's Plant Odyssey was broadcast by the BBC this summer but the veteran presenter said no new series is planned for 2016, though she "lives in hope" that she may be asked to present more shows. "I'd like to do more and I have a lot of other ideas too," she said.
