Garden retailers hit out at bank holiday bad weather reports

Garden centre industry figures have voiced their frustration at headlines suggesting the August bank holiday will be a washout.

Alton Garden Centre director Andy Bunker said: "The next most powerful thing to the actual weather is the press telling us about the weather. I am sure if we were going to have a good bank holiday forecast it would have appeared on page seven column four but, no, because it is suggested  it wil be a bad one, that equals front page headline news Monday morning, well certainly in my paper anyway.

"Surely customers or potential customers reading that will not rush out for plants and be planning an outdoor party."

HTA marketing head Andrew Maxted said: "It is a frustration for all of us and for gardeners and consumers that the media do tend to forget we have different weather in different parts of the country. Last weekend was the hottest of the year in some areas but in others it was cloudy with a bit of rain. To try and give an overall picture for the sake of a newspaper headline seldom tells the whole story. It’s frustrating for an industry that is impacted by the weather."
