The Easter weekend had a disappointing start with wet and windy weather on Good Friday and mixed conditions on Saturday. Most garden centres were closed on Sunday when the weather improved but saw sales pick up on Easter Monday. The good weather is forecast to continue this week.
Squire’s Garden Centres managing director Dennis Espley said Monday had been a "bumper day" but the weekend overall had been split because of the weather.
"Friday and Saturday were really disappointing but it has picked up on Monday and Tuesday," he said, adding that people have started buying bedding, shrubs and garden furniture, with compost and gifts better than average.
Chief executive Bents in Cheshire Matthew Bent said that following a "washout" on Friday, Saturday and Monday were good, with both days up on last year.
He said the improved weather was "getting everyone out and in the gardening mood" and the coming week is looking positive.
