New GCA figures for 42 centres show the big categories of outdoor plants were almost 10% down on 2007, as were seeds and bulbs and garden sundries.
Hard landscaping was down 17% and furniture/BBQs were down nearly 30%. Catering was down almost 2%.
Year-to-date figures show only gifts, pets/aquatics and catering up, while outdoor plants are down almost 4%, furniture/BBQs 10% and hard landscaping 15%.
But garden centres are still selling. Lincolnshire-based Brigg and Woodthorpe Hall garden centres owner Charles Stubbs has bought Arcadia Garden Centre in Middlesbrough through agents and Garden Retail sponsor, Quinton Edwards.
The centre was on the market for £1.15m.
